Blacks in Disney!

Its about time that Disney finally gives the African American community their own princess. Something for the little black girls to be proud about. Someone that can look up to. They doint have to say anymore. I want to be like Barbie because of her long flowing hair... they can be like Princess Tiana.

Bamboozled!

This film is full of racism and crazy jokes. I love Spike Lee films and how he make the viewer stop and think about what is really going on. Bamboozled is a powerful, hard-hitting satire within a satire of both the historical and modern stereotypical portrayal of black Americans in mass media. It looks at how, in the film, a black, Harvard-educated television writer, Pierre Delacroix develops an idea for the rebirth of a traditional minstrel show, expecting that the outcry from this racist throwback will cause him to be fired, thus negating and freeing him from his contract. It discusses how the ironic and fateful twist in the plan is that it backfires and how the show goes into production and the public loves it. Rather than recognizing the show as satire, all the negative, demeaning stereotypes are embraced and mimicked by the masses. A chaotic series of events ensues, culminating in the tragic deaths of several of the characters.

Racsim In Ameria

Last Wednesday I attended an open forum regarding race relations in the United States. It was a great open forum that was organized by the UNT collegiate chapter of the National Association of Black Journalist. We talked about the question "Is Our President black or biracial?" I posed the comment that our president is black and according to the Jim Crow laws in the south that where abolished in 1964, if a person has one-tenth of black blood in there body, they are considered to be black/negro/african-america whatever they may be calling us now days. We also discuss the question, "Is racism still prevalent in the USA?" I believe as long as I can still still hear about nooses on college campuses or people openly calling young ladies "nappy headed hoes" racism is still around.

What Defines Beauty?

Webster defines beauty as the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, color, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else (as a personality in which high spiritual qualities are manifest). and as my mother would say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Women of all races try to achieve this word "beauty" by carrying themselves through timeless changes. I was actually watching Dr. Phil the other day and a woman has had over 38 different types of cosmetic surgery just to have someone call her beautiful. Aren't we all beautiful...

Blacks and the media

I am so excited to announce that I am taking a course entitled Race, Gender and the Media. Last time in class we watched this film in which gave us a little history on how the Black Press was started and drop some of the names of my mentors like Ida B Wells and S. E. Cornish. I guess it was exciting to see how people from all races where interested in the history and the development of the black press. After class, I stopped and talked to some of my white classmates about the movie and the information and from the conversation that where overjoyed about what they have just witnessed, this lost piece of history.
